60 ways to support small businesses during the pandemic: What to do to support local stores during Covid-19, and what not to do
There's a lot of things about the pandemic and lockdown we can't seem to agree on, except that we're ready for this to be over. Another thing everyone seems to agree on is that small businesses need support. Every time a small business makes a sale, the employees do a happy dance! That's because your purchase directly impacts their family and livelihood. Our community needs support. Please remember this important fact: Most small businesses are not closed, they just aren't letting folks in. Curbside service and online shopping and delivery are available for many small businesses and many offer debit or e-transfer options for those without credit cards. There are many ways to support small businesses. I tried to create the ULTIMATE list of ways to support small businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic, taking into account businesses of all types and different ways we can offer help. There are many ways you can support small businesses without spending money too, which I included because I know many are struggling financially but still want to support their community. I've also included what not to do to try to support a small business.

Early in 2020, Craig Myers and I were sitting on the set of a short film discussing our next projects. Craig had recently begun taking a course on sustainability, and I had been kicking around the idea of making a travel series focused on exploring our backyard. Through two days of chatting, we honed in on shooting a series in Algonquin Park. Craig is from Ottawa, and I am from Hamilton, but we both grew up with a connection to camping and cottage country, so the draw to the park was pretty natural. As we prepared the project, Brad and Mitch joined on as our cinematography team, both of them having a love for cinematography and exploring the natural world made it a perfect fit.

Protecting the Ottawa River watershed: First Nations history important for the future
of the environment
“Water is speaking: Are we listening?” That question was
posed by Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee in the book Boiling Point by Maude Barlow. Water is life- the indigenous people have always known this to be
true. Water feeds our bodies, water is
our bodies. Water is prosperity; water is safety. Water should be clean.
Ontario Parks: Best parks to snowshoe in Petawawa, Ontario
Petawawa is nestled between Pembroke and Chalk River in
the scenic Ottawa Valley region. The Ottawa Valley is known for its Provincial
Parks, white water rafting, year-round fishing, and natural resource
preservation.
Once the snow hits the ground the Ottawa Valley springs
back to life- headed by a diverse cross country ski and snowshoe community.
Several ski and snowshoe clubs exist in Petawawa and the surrounding area and
they maintain the trails every winter. Outdoor adventure is in people’s blood
in the Ottawa Valley and winter exploration is welcome and celebrated.

Extraordinary pet: Sully's adventure is just beginning
Sully is just over two years old but this dog has seen more
adventure than most dogs 10 times his age. That’s because this hound mix has
met his match- outdoor adventure and nature enthusiast Courtney Sinclair.
Courtney fell in love with Sully’s goofy spirit in a heartbeat and they have
explored the Canadian wilderness together ever since.
Courtney fell for Sully’s kind eyes and big ears when a
teammate and OSPCA employee brought him to one of their rugby games in hopes of
getting him adopted. He as a clumsy puppy and absolutely adorable- Courtney was
in love.
They now live together in a house on the waterfront. Sully’s
journey with Courtney takes him all over the Ottawa Valley through scenic
forests and along glistening rivers. Sully lives right smack in the middle of
some of the most beautiful Provincial Parks in Ontario. He loves all of the
wildlife he gets to experience and he even gets to chase the occasional
squirrel or two.
