Happy Canada Day: How to celebrate Canada Day during the global COVID-19 pandemic
Everything has changed since Canada- and the rest of the world- has been hit with the coronavirus pandemic. While COVID-19 positive trends are decreasing in Ottawa, it is still really important to practice social and physical distancing. This makes traditional Canada Day celebrations difficult or impossible. Many patriotic Canadians are thinking outside the box when it comes to celebrating the True North on July 1st, 2020. Here are some ways you can have a safe and healthy Canada Day during the pandemic.
CBC Virtual Canada Day
CBC is hosting Virtual Canada Day, a virtual party and concert to celebrate the strength and resistance of Canadians. Alanis Morissette will headline, and she will be joined by many other musical guests including Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan. The event will feature a daytime and evening show hosted by Serena Ryder and Pierre-Yves Lord. Virtual Canada Day begins at 1 p.m. ET. The evening show will end with a montage of fireworks from past Canada Days.
Tim Hortons sponsored Virtual Canada Day Fireworks
At 10 p.m. ET you can point your smartphone or tablet to the sky, and a virtual fireworks display will appear on your phone, sponsored by Canadian staple Tim Hortons. The Tim Hortons sponsored Virtual Canada Day Fireworks will be a 3-minute show of 3D fireworks and have the same visual and sound effects as a real fireworks display. You will need to authorize access to the camera on your smartphone or tablet to see the show, but there will be a video available for computer users to watch.
Visit a National Park
Canada has reopened National Parks. Hiking is a great way to celebrate the Canadian wilderness while still physically distancing. Check out the Parks Canada website to find out about visiting a park during the pandemic.
Peak To Shore Canada Day Celebration
Another virtual celebration! Blue Mountain Villiage in Collingwood is hosting Peak To Shore- a 3 hour Canada Day party on Facebook and YouTube. It will have dancing, concerts, segments from special places, and a tribute to our frontline workers and everyday heroes!
Toronto Zoo Virtual Canada Day
Spend the day at the zoo- virtually! The Toronto Zoo wants you to get red, white and wild on Canada Day, which is perfect because July is Wild About Wildlife Month. Join them for their Virtual Canada Day Party from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. ET for a celebration of Canada’s diverse landscapes and the animals that call our beautiful country home. Toronto Zoo staff and Mayor John Tory will introduce you to some interesting animals, there will be a wild parade, trivia, Bingo, and some fantastic tunes! The event is free and you can download their Activity Pack for Canada Day to maximize the fun.
Canada Day Celebration Kit
Looking for something to do with the entire family? The Government of Canada has uploaded Canada Day Celebration Kits you can download. They are fun, educational, interactive kits for the family filled with lots of activities for kids.
